Happy Thanksgiving!
It's a glorious day, blue skies, chilly this morning, but it's supposed to get nice.
Michael and I went for a walk at 6:30 AM, our ears were cold, but it was nice to get out and walk before the cooking marathon starts. The bird is in the oven, the blueberry pie was made last night, so was the cranberry sauce, and the veggies for the stuffing/dressing (no, not putting it in the bird).
The house is vacuumed, dusted, and the table is set.
Actually I didn't want to make a list, I wanted to write about yesterday. I'm feeding the birds. I have the traditional bird feeder, and I put out the suet cakes. We came home early yesterday afternoon, I refilled the suet, and was watching the birds. And I saw the big woodpecker! The pileated woodpecker, he is huge in comparison to the other, smaller woodpeckers we've been seeing. A little bigger than a pigeon or turtle dove, I was so excited, the first time I've seen one of those in person. I hope he comes back!
And this morning on our way back from walking around the pond, an eagle was soaring over us! Clearly an eagle, the white head was so distinctive, not to be confused with any other bird. The first time I've seen one of those up close in the 'wild'.
Anyway, here is what it looks like at the moment:

Btw, the Westerwaelder pot in the back is from my mother's house. She pulled it out of the ruins after WWII, and used it as a cookie jar, sometimes forgetting that she kept Christmas cookies in it, to find them in the middle of the summer.

Heute ist Thanksgiving, und wir kochen fuer Nicole und Familie. Erika und Bande kommt nach dem Essen fuer Nachtisch.
Michael und ich gingen heute ganz frueh - 6:30 - schon fuer einen kurzen Spaziergang um den kleinen See, da heute ein 'Fressfest' wird. Der Truthahn - 24 Pfund - ist schon im Oven, und andere Vorbereitungen sind schon getroffen.
Aber ich will hier keine Liste auffuehren, sondern von meinem Erlebnis gestern erzaehlen. Ich fuettere unsere Voegel, das ganze Jahr durch, und habe auch immer regen Betrieb. Aber gestern sah ich einen Woodpecker, den ganz grossen, oben ist der Link, ich freute mich sehr, ich hatte ihn bis jetzt noch nicht gesehen.
Und als wir heute morgen auf dem Rueckweg waren, sahen wir einen Adler! Der erste amerikanische 'bald eagle', den ich in freier Natuer von nahem sah - toll! Ich freute mich sehr.
So, mehr vielleicht spaeter oder morgen!
24 Pfund?? Wie groß ist der Ofen? Und wie lange braucht der?
ReplyDeleteSusi, vielleicht war der Truthahn ein klein wenig kleiner als 24 Pfund (amerikanische Pfunde sind 1/10 kleiner als 'deutsche'), also wiegte er immer noch ueber 20 Pfund, aber die Oefen sind hier gross genug fuer so einen grossen Truthahn!
